O tabagismo pode prejudicar a cicatrização adequada de um implante dentário, principalmente na região anterior onde a ação vasoconstrictora da nicotina é mais efetiva pela proximidade onde o fumante posiciona o cigarro na boca. A literatura mostra que o tabagismo pode ter relação com o insucesso de implantes dentários em diversas fases de um tratamento reabilitador. Na fase pós-cirúrgica, é importante ficar sem fumar para evitar problemas nessa fase de cicatrização, além de maior atenção na etapa de controle e manutenção. Pessoas que fumam apresentam risco maior de infecção após a cirurgia e podem apresentar cicatrização mais lenta, quando um implante é colocado em um fumante, a probabilidade de insucesso é maior e o paciente deve estar ciente dos riscos.
